San Francisco lab training frontier models that specialise in AI research and engineering itself, wrapped in a product that behaves like a coding agent pointed at AI work: it controls its own GPUs and loops over research problems with less human intervention over time. Founded by Behnam Neyshabur and Harsh Mehta, who worked together at Google and then Anthropic before leaving in December 2025, with the stated aim of putting frontier R&D within reach of universities and research institutions outside the largest labs. The $200M seed closed on 2026-06-25 at a $1B valuation - one of the largest seed rounds ever raised by an AI company - co-led by Andreessen Horowitz and Kleiner Perkins with NVIDIA participating. In August 2026 it signed a compute deal worth more than $100M with Google Cloud, about half the seed. Reported by Bloomberg on 2026-09-22 to be in talks to raise again at about $5B, five times the seed mark three months later; the mark stays at the seed until that prices.
