2026-09-24 — Two labs buy plumbing, and a citation that was never a round
A quiet day for prices and a busy one for plumbing. No mark on the map moved on a new round, but two of yesterday's deals were between companies the map already carries, which is rarer than it sounds: Mira Murati's Thinking Machines bought inference capacity from the energy-first neocloud Crusoe at about $65 million a year, and Anthropic agreed to supply the models behind a free version of the doctors' search engine OpenEvidence across roughly a hundred poorer countries. Both become edges. The pass also added one company — Basecamp Research, a London outfit that trains biological models on DNA gathered from more than thirty countries, with both NVIDIA and Anthropic in its round — and fixed OpenEvidence's own valuation citation, which turned out to point at an aggregator sheet rather than at the round that set the number. The number was right; the citation had never been a round at all, which is the failure mode this map has now met on five separate aggregator families.

Marks moved
Basecamp Research(new) → $800M$140M oversubscribed Series C led by S32, with NVIDIA, Anthropic's Anthology Fund, Catalio, the NATO Innovation Fund and Rockefeller; company release 2026-09-23 plus a Reuters wire story carrying the $800M post-money. verified — release · Reuters · Tech.eu
OpenEvidence$12B → $12BNumber unchanged, citation replaced. It was carried on a Sacra aggregator sheet dated "2026-01" with no round behind it; the real basis is the $250M Series D co-led by Thrive Capital and DST Global on 2026-01-21, which doubled the October 2025 mark. No existing mark moved on a new round today.
New edges
tml —rents→ crusoe — Thinking Machines put production inference for its open models (Inkling, GLM 5.2 and 5.3, and its own fine-tunes) on Crusoe Managed Inference at about $65M a year, on dedicated NVIDIA HGX B200 systems; Crusoe says the product has passed $100M of contracted ARR less than a year from launch. Crusoe newsroom and GlobeNewswire, 2026-09-23, verified.openevidence —routes→ anthropic — Anthropic supplies the model capacity behind a free OpenEvidence for doctors in roughly 100 low- and middle-income countries, extending earlier pilots in Rwanda and Botswana. Joint announcement, 2026-09-23, verified.nvidia —invests_in→ basecamp — NVIDIA named in the Series C release, 2026-09-23, verified.anthropic —invests_in→ basecamp — through Anthropic's Anthology Fund, its partnership with Menlo Ventures, named in the same release. 2026-09-23, verified. This is the map's first Anthropic investment edge sourced to that fund.
Still in talks
- Baseten at about $26B and Modal at about $15B, reported the same day and framed as one story about surging demand for inference platforms; the map carries $13B and $4.65B. Axios 2026-09-22, Bloomberg 2026-09-23. No lead, no close — both would roughly double.
- Legora seeking at least $300M at roughly an $8.5B pre-money, up more than half from the $5.6B April extension the map carries, on ARR its CFO puts at $200M. Bloomberg 2026-09-22, terms may change. Note the pre-money framing: a close would mark nearer $8.8B.
- Stripe / OpenRouter — day 36 since the agreement, still "customary closing conditions" and still "the coming weeks", with no close notice from either party. That is now 2.6x the Crusoe precedent of 14 days.
- UniPat AI — day 14, and Bloomberg's 2026-09-10 story is still the only sourcing and still says "set to close soon". Manus ($500M at $4B, day 7), Shield AI (Series H at $20B+, day 9) and 1X / SoftBank (majority stake at ~$6B, four weeks) are all unchanged too.
- OpenAI — the $1.2T round is still investor-initiated and early, but CFO Sarah Friar has now told staff the company "will be a public company in 2027", the firmest listing language anyone there has used since Altman ruled out 2026. The $852B March round stands.
- Nscale — six days after the S-1 and still no price range or share count. The FT reported that ByteDance, close to three quarters of 2025 revenue and about 52% of the first half of 2026, is not named anywhere in the prospectus; it reached NVIDIA chips through Nscale's Norwegian site that it could not buy in China.
- NVIDIA / Hugging Face — NVIDIA has not yet decided whether the $12.9B deal is notifiable in the EU, and may ask Brussels to take the case rather than face parallel national reviews under member states' new call-in powers. MLex and Global Competition Review, both this week.
Leads I could not verify
- Basecamp Research's $800M rests on search relays of the PRNewswire release and a Reuters wire story. WebFetch is egress-blocked here, so nobody on this pass read the release itself to confirm the post-money is in it rather than only in the coverage — worth a human opening the page.
- Island ($400M Series F at a $6.4B post-money, led by Evolution Equity with Sequoia, Coatue, Insight and Cyberstarts following; GlobeNewswire and CNBC today) clears the valuation floor and fails the edge gate: every named investor is a fund, and it is an enterprise browser positioning itself as an agentic control plane rather than an AI-first company. Held off — the fourth AI-security name blocked this way after Upwind, Horizon3.ai and Exein.
- Ema ($77M Series B led by Creaegis) and Go.AI ($85M Series A) both disclose a round size and no valuation, so there is nothing to mark against — the Euclyd and Delos Data rule.
- Qualcomm / PickNik Robotics (the maintainers of MoveIt) — no terms disclosed anywhere found, so no node and no edge.
build/logos.py is still blocked by the egress proxy, so basecamp has no logo; run it from an unblocked machine with --only basecamp.
