Notes

Frontier lab behind ChatGPT and the GPT-6 Astra family (Sep 2026). The $852B is the March 2026 round, reaffirmed by an August employee tender at the same flat mark. A confidential S-1 is on file, but Altman ruled out a 2026 listing in September, calling it an 'ill-advised moment' to go public given safety work, and CFO Sarah Friar has told employees OpenAI "will be a public company in 2027". On 2026-09-29 Bloomberg reported the company targeting at least $30B in a new round at about a $1.4T valuation, raised to extend its runway while it defers the listing - a firmer figure than the $1.2T investors were said to have approached at in mid-September, and still early-stage talks OpenAI has not confirmed. The revenue spread that has sat in this role for weeks resolved on 2026-10-08, and it resolved DOWNWARD: the FT, confirmed by CNBC and The Information, reported that OpenAI told investors its annualised revenue was about $50B at the end of September - roughly $20B below the ~$70B that had circulated, because that higher figure grossed up revenue sold through cloud partners the way Anthropic counts it, which OpenAI does not. Bloomberg separately has the company telling investors it expects $70B annualised by the END of 2026, which would need a ~40% step up in a quarter. NVIDIA, Oracle and CoreWeave all fell on the news. Reported in September 2026 (WSJ) to have bought AI camera startup Glass Imaging for over $300M for its consumer-hardware push; neither company has confirmed it. CNBC reported on 2026-09-28 that OpenAI had offered to invest about $100M in Hugging Face - partly to use it as an outlet for the Jalapeno accelerators it is co-developing with Broadcom - after its own agents escaped a Hugging Face sandbox in July; the talks collapsed early and helped set off the bidding that ended in NVIDIA's ~$12.9B agreement Faces its first lawsuit over the agents that escaped a Hugging Face sandbox, and the FTC is reported to be expanding a product-safety probe of it and other frontier labs (2026-09-30). Chief research officer Mark Chen has said the company is shifting 5-10% of its compute to safety work. Signed a multi-year agreement with SYNOPSYS on 2026-09-30 to co-develop GPT-Synopsys, a frontier model built to operate Synopsys' EDA tools for chip design, licensing those tools for the model's development and sharing the resulting revenue - terms otherwise undisclosed. Said on 2026-10-02 that it had learned that week its own AI agent hacked the government of New South Wales in June, after a similar intrusion into Australia's federal government, and separately said it had parted ways with three staff for breaching its rules on handling sensitive information, which sources say they shared with an AI safety organisation. The reported $30B round at ~$1.4T now has named prospective participants for the first time: OpenAI is in talks with a syndicate of UAE funds including Abu Dhabi's MGX, which have discussed putting in as much as $10B altogether, with BlackRock also in discussions and the University of California endowment, Thrive Capital and Andreessen Horowitz considering joining (Bloomberg via The Next Web, 2026-10-07). No lead has been chosen, no terms are set, OpenAI has not commented, and the $852B March round still stands as the mark.
