2026-09-17 — Cohere triples on a signed merger, and a $2B company the map had never heard of

Two things happened today that the map had been waiting on without knowing it. Cohere, the Canadian enterprise AI company, signed a definitive agreement to merge with Germany's Aleph Alpha at a reported $20B — which finally explains the week of reports that Cohere was "in advanced talks to raise $2-3B at $20B". It is one company now, headquartered in both Berlin and Toronto, pitched at European and Canadian governments that want frontier-scale AI without standardising on an American or Chinese provider. The map's mark goes from $7B to $20B, though deliberately as reported rather than verified: the merger still needs regulatory approval, and the funding round that actually prices the $20B has not closed. Separately, the generic sweep turned up something more embarrassing than a stale number — Upscale AI, an AI-networking company that raised $190M at a $2B valuation back in June with NVIDIA in the round, and which this map had simply never heard of. It joins today, along with Anew Labs, ByteDance's AI drug-discovery unit, spun out at $1.5B.

Cohere$7B verified (2025-09-24) → $20B reported, dated 2026-09-16

A definitive combination agreement with Aleph Alpha at a reported ~$20B, signed 16 September, formalising the April framework: dual HQ in Berlin and Toronto, 1,000+ staff, Aleph Alpha's Ilhan Scheer becoming Cohere's COO. Held at reported, not verified, for two reasons — the deal needs regulatory clearance before it closes later in 2026, and the Series E that prices it (Schwarz Group committing $600M) has not closed either. Aleph Alpha gets no node of its own: it is being absorbed. SiliconANGLE · Reuters/Yahoo · CNBC, April · TechCrunch, April

Lambda$5.9B reported (dated 2026-06-05, aggregator) → $5.9B reported, dated 2025-11-18

Number unchanged, citation replaced — and this is the first aggregator mark that could not be tied to a primary at all. The Nov 2025 Series E is company-announced (over $1.5B led by TWG Global with Thomas Tull's USIT) but discloses no valuation; the $5.9B exists only as Forge Global secondary-market data, and some write-ups say "$4B+" instead. So the mark keeps its number, now dated to the round instead of to a spreadsheet scrape, and says in its own sources that no primary states the figure. Lambda · BusinessWire · DCD

Two entities were added. Upscale AI at $2B reported — a pure-play AI-networking company building open-standard switch silicon, systems and SONiC software, which closed a $190M Series A-1 led by Premji Invest in June with NVIDIA, Salesforce Ventures and Temasek joining, taking it to ~$500M raised in under 18 months. Its pitch is to be the open alternative to NVIDIA's networking lock-in, which it builds on NVIDIA's own Spectrum-X switch silicon. Anew Labs at $1.5B reported — ByteDance's AI drug-discovery unit, an internal project since 2021, spun out with ~50 staff and its model stack, having raised a $290M first external round led by HSG, IDG Capital and GL Ventures. ByteDance keeps 56%. It makes the open-sourced Protenix structure-prediction model and PXDesign for designing protein binders from scratch, and has its own drug candidates.

Roles updated without a mark change: OpenAI (the $1.2T round talks) and ByteDance (the Anew Labs spinout).

Also confirmed resolved: the Enflame price-feed fix worked end to end. The hand-seeded $26B placeholder on its Shanghai listing was replaced by a real $30,648M market cap on last night's ticker run, via the Tencent quote fallback built for mainland symbols Yahoo has not onboarded.
