2026-10-30 - Canada buys into Cohere, and Korea prices its NVIDIA challenger
Two governments wrote cheques into AI companies today, which is new. Canada took an equity stake of up to C$1.6B in Cohere, its only frontier-model company, as part of the largest private financing round in Canadian history; South Korea's National Growth Fund was the biggest investor in FuriosaAI's long-awaited round, which finally put a price on the Korean chip startup that turned down Meta. Both are states deciding that sovereign AI is worth owning rather than renting. Meanwhile Alphabet lost a record $500B of market value in a day, not for missing on AI but for what AI is costing it.

New edges
furiosa --designed_with-> broadcom - Broadcom co-develops FuriosaAI's third-generation inference accelerator, moving its Tensor Contraction Processor into a multi-die chiplet system on a 2 nm compute die with HBM4/4E, with Broadcom's advanced packaging integrating the dies and its Ethernet and PCIe carrying the fabric; sampling in the first half of 2028. FuriosaAI's own blog, 2026-05-28, surfaced from the round coverage five months after the fact. sourcenvidia --invests_in-> cohere was not new but was three years stale; its citation now rests on NVIDIA returning in the Series E rather than on the 2023 round. source
Still in talks
- Fluidstack: Situational Awareness is pitching its own clients to invest alongside it at a $40B valuation, more than double September's $18B. A pitch, with no lead and no size (Bloomberg).
- Cognition: the "$75B talks" in today's feed is the midpoint of the $70-80B reported on 10-28, not a new report. Mark holds at the $48B September round.
- Marvell / Lumentum: Marvell fell about 11% on reported merger talks. No terms, no confirmation, and Lumentum is not on the map.
- Oracle / OpenAI: ChatGPT and Codex are to be embedded across Fusion Applications, NetSuite and OCI, which is shaped like a
routes edge, but most of the package is still in development. Held under the same rule as Oracle's three new silicon suppliers. - Intel / Classiq: ruled out of scope as quantum software two days ago, but the price is now filing-grade. Intel's 10-Q says about $1.9B, below the $2.3B the press reported. A human call.
Leads I could not verify
- Deepgram / Daily: two feed items say Deepgram is acquiring Daily, maker of the Pipecat voice-agent framework. A direct search finds no report of it and no terms. Unverified, not disproven; Daily is off map, so nothing would change either way.
- Firmus: the feed's "Australia's corporate regulator probing failed $5 billion Firmus IPO" uses the wrong verb. ASIC's chair told Senate estimates on 10-28 that no formal investigation is open and that ASIC is making targeted inquiries of the float's four lead managers.
- Both of today's marks rest on search corroboration only, as this sandbox blocks the pages: nobody here opened furiosa.ai, Cohere's post or Intel's 10-Q. A human should read them.
