2026-09-11 — China's last big AI chip startup goes public, and the DOJ takes an interest in NVIDIA
Enflame, the Shanghai chip designer Tencent has funded since 2018, tripled on its first day of trading — the last of China's four big AI-chip startups to reach the public market, and a sign that Chinese investors will pay almost anything for a domestic alternative to NVIDIA. In Washington the mood is the opposite: the Justice Department has opened an antitrust investigation into the $20B licensing deal through which NVIDIA took Groq's chip technology and most of its people without ever calling it an acquisition. Elsewhere, money kept moving into the unglamorous layer beneath the models — inference silicon, optical interconnect, and the power and cooling gear that decides how fast data centres actually get built.
Today in AI

Still in talks
- Fluidstack / Pentagon — ~$5B loan from the Office of Strategic Capital under discussion; neither side commented (WSJ via Reuters, 2026-09-10). Debt, so no mark move even if it closes.
- Anthropic IPO — marketing now expected mid-October at the earliest, prospectus public late September, listing just before the midterms; bankers discussing up to ~$2T against the $965B May Series H (Reuters via CNBC, 2026-09-05). Map stays at $965B.
- Moonshot — now exploring dual Hong Kong and Shanghai listings (SCMP, 2026-09-10); carried at the $20B May round until priced.
- Qualcomm / Tenstorrent — no change. The feed item is a recycled June story; the talks were reported at $8–10B on 2026-06-15 and Tenstorrent's CEO denied them on 2026-06-30.
- Unchanged and still open: Thinking Machines, Mercor, Physical Intelligence, Surge, Fal, Nscale's pre-IPO convertibles, and DeepSeek's Shanghai STAR filing.
Leads I could not verify
- Ayar Labs at >$5B rests on search corroboration only. The company's own release discloses no valuation, and the $5B comes from a secondary transaction reported by SiliconANGLE, Converge Digest and Unite.AI — no Reuters, Bloomberg or TechCrunch story carries it. Marked
reported; worth a human reading the primary. - Positron clears the valuation floor at $5B but has no mappable edge — every named investor is a fund with no node here. Secondary write-ups say its Atlas servers use Altera FPGAs and future ASICs go to Intel Foundry; if a primary confirms that,
positron —fabricated_by→ intel would admit it. - Analog Devices / Alif — the deal is solidly sourced, but Alif's only edge runs to ADI, which is not on the map. Adding it means adding a broad analog vendor with no other AI edge: a human call.
- UniPat, reported to have raised $300M backed by Alibaba, appears only in a single low-tier outlet. Not acted on.
- Upstage (AMD-backed, Korea) is said by Bloomberg to be weighing a pre-IPO round — no size, no mark, and Upstage is not on the map.
- Meta/Stilla.ai and Harvey/Guardrails AI are both real but undisclosed-terms acquihires of companies far below the $100M floor — correctly no map change.
build/logos.py is still blocked by the egress proxy (403 on the favicon host), so enflame joins gimlet, higgsfield and stripe in needing a logo fetched from an unblocked machine.
