2026-09-12 — A weapons cell ran Claude like a software team, and the map catches a deal it slept through
Anthropic published its periodic report on people misusing Claude, and the standout case is grim: a Yemen-based weapons group ran several copies of Claude Code at once — one writing guidance software for missiles, one researching, one reviewing the first one's work — and came back to it within hours of a failed test-fire to debug the rocket. Separately, the money around Anthropic itself kept getting larger: NVIDIA is in early talks to anchor its IPO with as much as $10B. On the map, the day's real work was housekeeping of the embarrassing kind. Qualcomm finished buying Modular — the company behind Mojo and a serving stack built to loosen NVIDIA's software grip — on July 29, six weeks ago, and this map never noticed, because the watchlist had filed it as "closing in H2" and nobody re-checked. It is on the map now.
Today in AI
- Anthropic said it disrupted a Yemen-based weapons cell that used Claude Code "in place of human software engineers" to build guidance and navigation software for ballistic and hypersonic missile programmes, one of six operations it cut off across China, Russia and Yemen — Al Jazeera link
- NVIDIA is in preliminary talks to become an anchor investor in Anthropic's IPO with up to $10B, as Anthropic weighs raising as much as $100B at roughly $2T — which would make it the largest public offering ever — Bloomberg link

Marks moved
ElevenLabs$11B reported → $11B verifiedSame number, real source. The mark had been sitting on an Eqvista aggregator sheet dated 2026-06-05; it is now the company's own Series D post — $500M led by Sequoia, with a16z, ICONIQ, Lightspeed, Evantic and BOND — and dated to the round itself, 2026-02-04. ElevenLabs blog · TechCrunch
Modular(new node) → no independent markQualcomm completed its ~$3.9B all-stock acquisition on 2026-07-29, five weeks after signing and ahead of its own H2 guidance; founder Chris Lattner now runs Qualcomm's AI software. Added as a division of Qualcomm, so it carries no valuation of its own (CLAUDE.md arbitration rule 1) — the $3.9B is what cleared the floor, not what the node displays. Verified. Qualcomm release · Modular blog · CNBC
Roles updated without a mark change: ElevenLabs (the UMG deal), Baseten (bought agent-sandbox startup Blaxel on 2026-09-10, terms undisclosed — its second acquisition since June), Nscale (Simo's board seat).
New edges
qualcomm —owns→ modular — Qualcomm closed the ~$3.9B all-stock purchase of Modular on 2026-07-29, announced by both companies. Verified, solid line. This is the edge that admitted Modular: a hardware-agnostic inference layer landing inside a chip vendor is exactly the kind of move this map exists to show, and it sits next to Qualcomm's existing fabricated_by leg to TSMC and the designed_with leg from Amazon.
Still in talks
- UniPat AI / Alibaba — Alibaba is set to lead $300M at a $2.5B valuation in the Beijing model-benchmarking startup, with Tencent and HSG also in (Bloomberg, 2026-09-10). Bloomberg says "slated to lead" and "set to close soon", so this is talks, not a mark. Both gates would pass on close, with Alibaba and Tencent edges — added to the watchlist to pick up the moment it closes.
- Anthropic / NVIDIA — the $10B anchor and the ~$100B-at-$2T raise are explicitly preliminary (Reuters, 2026-09-11). The map stays at the $965B May Series H until a prospectus or a priced deal.
- Stripe / OpenRouter — re-checked; still no close notice. Every result is the same Aug 16–19 agree-to-acquire coverage, so OpenRouter's $7B stays
reported and the owns edge stays dashed. - Crusoe ($30B), Fluidstack ($18B) and Poolside ($12B) — re-searched, and none of the three has published a release. Crusoe's co-leads are now named (Atreides and Valor, with Mubadala Capital) and Fluidstack's raise is now reported at $1.5B co-led by Jane Street and Situational Awareness, but it is all still secondary reporting. All three stay
reported. - Unchanged and still open: Thinking Machines, Mercor, Physical Intelligence, Surge, Fal, Nscale's pre-IPO convertibles, DeepSeek's STAR filing and unresolved post-money, Moonshot's dual-listing plan, StepFun, Lightmatter and OpenAI's confidential S-1.
Leads I could not verify
- Both of today's marks rest on search corroboration, not a fetched page. WebFetch is blocked here for essentially every news and company domain, so the ElevenLabs Series D post and the Qualcomm and Modular completion releases were confirmed by their titles, URLs and dates appearing in search results alongside agreeing coverage (TechCrunch for ElevenLabs; HPCwire/AIwire, StorageReview and Unite.AI for the Modular close). Worth a human opening all three pages.
- Modular sat closed and unrecorded for six weeks. The watchlist carried it as "closing H2 2026" and as an open human call; nothing in the company news feed could have caught it, because a company with no node gets no feed query. Any watchlist entry phrased as "closing in H2" is now a search to re-run every pass, not a note to re-read.
- Enflame's $26B is still the hand-seeded debut figure. The
shares_m fallback was committed after the last ticker cron run, and the cron is weekdays-only, so nothing has priced 688801.SS yet. The next run is Monday 2026-09-14 — that pass must confirm the hand-seeded mark is gone. - Baseten / Blaxel and ElevenLabs / UMG both produce no map change and should not: Blaxel is a roughly $7M-seed company far below the floor with undisclosed terms, and UMG has no node, so there is nothing to draw an edge to.
- Upstage (AMD-backed) is reported to be weighing a pre-listing round — no size, no mark, not on the map. TAR ($120M Series A at ~$1B, Spark Capital) and Arlequin AI (€28M) name no on-map investor or partner.
build/logos.py is still blocked by the egress proxy (modular.com 403'd today), so modular joins gimlet and enflame in needing a logo from an unblocked machine. stripe and higgsfield have since landed and are off that list.
