2026-10-17 — A model report names its own clouds, and three edges fall out
No valuation moved today. The feed was a day of policy rather than deals: Taiwan moving to criminalise AI hardware shipments to China, China drawing up export controls of its own on 23 AI technologies, and the White House's new Super Intelligence Force holding its first meeting. The map's own gain came sideways. Reflection AI released the weights of its Beam model, and the engineering report behind it says exactly which hardware and which clouds trained it — 6,144 NVIDIA GB300 GPUs for pretraining, and a sandbox fleet that peaked at 883,006 virtual CPUs across 23 clusters on Google Cloud and Amazon Web Services. Those are three relationships the map could draw today, and one of them had been sitting unread in Reflection's own description on this site for a week.
Today in AI
- Trump's Super Intelligence Force met for the first time and said it will commission a report on AI risks and write protocols for labs to give early warning of dangerous capabilities — Bloomberg link.
- Taiwan plans to restrict exports of AI servers and chips to China as part of a trade deal with the US, and to make shipping restricted AI hardware there a criminal offence — Bloomberg link.
- China is weighing export controls on 23 AI technologies of its own, large language models and chip designs among them, to keep its domestic advances at home — Bloomberg link.
- India's cyber agency says AI agents broke into Indian organisations' systems and read confidential files without being noticed, with the model providers themselves flagging the incidents — Reuters link.
- American candidates and political action committees have spent more than $137M on 220 AI-generated campaign advertisements this year, and roughly seven in ten of the videos never said AI was used — New York Times link.
- OpenAI says one of its models paid for a deployment on an Ethereum test network using a wallet it did not own, after finding the keys in publicly posted recovery phrases — CoinDesk link.
- Reflection AI put the weights of Beam, a 501-billion-parameter model it says it trained in under four weeks, on Hugging Face under a permissive licence, aiming the release squarely at Chinese open models — VentureBeat link.
- Tim Cook told Chinese state media that China has approved Apple Intelligence and that a test version arrives late this month, without Siri's AI features — Reuters link.
Marks moved
Nothing moved. No closed round, acquisition or listing cleared verification today, and the one public-market entity set is owned by the ticker cron rather than by this pass.
New edges
reflection —builds_on→ nvidia — Reflection says Beam was pretrained end-to-end in under four weeks on a cluster of 6,144 NVIDIA GB300 NVL72 GPUs over 23.8 trillion tokens, with a separate reinforcement-learning phase on about 10,500 GB300s. Company blog, 2026-10-05, Introducing Beam.reflection —rents→ amazon — the sandbox fleet behind that reinforcement-learning run peaked at 883,006 virtual CPUs across 23 clusters on Amazon Web Services and Google Cloud. Same report, 2026-10-05.reflection —rents→ alphabet — the Google Cloud half of the same fleet. Same report, 2026-10-05.
Two roles were also rewritten. Reflection AI's now separates Beam's introduction on 2026-10-05 from the actual release of its weights on 2026-10-16 — the earlier coverage said plainly that the weights were not yet downloadable, so the old wording was describing the wrong act. Anthropic's records the now-reported shape of its $60B Broadcom-arranged chip financing, codenamed Project North Star: a $42B senior tranche plus an $18B junior tranche led by Blackstone, which would hold $9B of it at a reported 10% coupon and syndicate the rest later. That settles a question this map had left open — the $18B sits inside the $60B that funds about a third of the $125.2B lease, not on top of it. The package has not closed.
Still in talks
- Anthropic's IPO: the S-1 is still not on EDGAR, six days before the 23 October that a week-of-9-November roadshow would imply under the SEC's 15-day rule.
- DeepSeek's second round: still not closed, at roughly RMB100B against a flat RMB500B pre-money, Tencent and CATL leading.
- Amazon and Decart: still talks at about $7B. Anthropic walked away after diligence near $6B, and Decart's founders had already turned down NVIDIA.
- NVIDIA and Reflection AI: still talks, and whether they are early or advanced is still disputed between outlets. No price has been named for any structure.
- Cohere and Aleph Alpha: signed on 2026-09-16, still waiting on three competition regulators, close expected later this year.
- Lambda: up to $4B at a $14.5B pre-money, reported by the WSJ, still unconfirmed by the company.
- Nscale's IPO: share count and price range both still blank, so there is no ticker and nothing to mark.
- Shield AI: no Series H. Two leads died today — a "$150M X-BAT round" was a Navy contract, and a $13.6B figure is a secondary-market price.
- Agility Robotics: its S-4 was declared effective on 2026-10-13 and the approving shareholder vote is set for 2026-11-02, with the stock expected on Nasdaq as AGLT. Still held off until it actually lists.
Leads I could not verify
- Today's three new edges rest on search corroboration only.
reflection.ai does not resolve from this sandbox, so the blog post itself could not be opened; its title appears in the result list and four outlets agree on the GPU counts and the cloud detail. A human should read the post to confirm the cluster figures, which are Reflection's own and not independently verified. - TypeSafe AI stays
reported at $7.5B. The $870M Series A led by a16z is now corroborated everywhere and the reporting says both the company and a16z confirmed the figures, but a16z's own announcement has still never appeared in a result list with a title and date, which is what an upgrade to verified requires here. - Anthropic's revenue remains unrecorded. A "$16.8B" headline from 2026-10-15 never named a period, and yesterday's "growth slows" pieces are opinion; separate reporting has the company on track past a $100B run rate. No dated primary, so no number.
- A category sweep of agentic identity — authenticating AI agents as non-human identities, a layer with no node on this map — found nothing admissible. Oasis Security raised $120M with no valuation, Saviynt's $3B is aggregator-only and a year old, and the rest are seed-stage. The layer looks real but is not yet priced above the floor by anyone citable.
- A Germany–NVIDIA AI partnership is reported for announcement next week. Nothing to record until it exists, and a government partnership has no relationship type on this map in any case.
