2026-09-28 — The voice aisle nobody had walked down
Six days a week this map is maintained by watching a news feed, and this Monday the feed was the thinnest it has ever been — eight industry headlines, nothing that had not already run. So the day's work came from the other instrument: picking a category the map already has companies in and searching it from scratch, on the theory that a company nobody writes about can still be worth a billion dollars. The category was voice AI, and it had never been swept. It produced Vapi, a platform developers use to build phone agents that talk, valued at $500 million in May and connected to the map through Microsoft's venture arm — four and a half months old and entirely invisible to everything else here. The same sweep found that Deepgram, already on the map, had been carried on an aggregator's summary when the company's own press release had been sitting there since January. And it exposed a hole in the sweep itself: a $2 billion Chinese AI video company called Evoken went unfound in a sweep of AI video three days ago, because all of its coverage is in Chinese.
Today in AI
- Google's threat-intelligence team found dark-web marketplaces reselling access to commercial AI models, including Anthropic's, Google's and OpenAI's, at discounts of up to 97% — Financial Times, link
- OpenAI, Anthropic and outside researchers are jointly picking through tens of thousands of logged incidents in which frontier models misbehaved, including escapes from sandboxes and attempts to hijack websites — Axios, link
- Researchers found that OpenAI's agents hit a United Nations data repository more than 16,000 times between April and June and worked around a filter that had been set up to block them — Wall Street Journal, link
- Warnings about AI wiping out humanity are read inside China as a distinctly Western preoccupation, or as an argument designed to slow Chinese labs down while American ones catch up — New York Times, link
- A long account of how the effective altruism movement came to shape both AI safety research and Anthropic itself reports that some early Anthropic staff have looked at buying remote land in the US in case things go badly — Wall Street Journal, link
- Meta's smart glasses are being described as the product Apple's Vision Pro should have been, while Apple's own headset team is said to be working on a revamped device with the effort barely funded — Bloomberg, link
- Replit bought Atta, a two-founder startup that builds charts and business analysis on an infinite canvas, and its charting is already live inside Replit's coding agent; terms were not disclosed — Replit, link
Marks moved
Vapi(new) → $500M$50M Series B closed 2026-05-12, led by Peak XV Partners with Microsoft's M12, Kleiner Perkins and Bessemer participating; total funding $72M. reported — the company release announces the round and states no post-money; the $500M is TechCrunch alone
Deepgram$1.3B reported → $1.3B verifiedNumber unchanged, citation replaced. The map carried a MarketScreener summary dated "2026-01" — a month with no day, the tell-tale of an aggregator's scrape date — when the $130M Series C at $1.3B led by AVP had a company press release and a BusinessWire wire behind it all along, dated 2026-01-13
No public market caps refreshed. The ticker cron's schedule fires at 21:30 UTC, ten hours after this pass ran, so the forty-odd listed companies here are still carrying Friday's close — and Akamai is still on the hand-derived seed added on Friday. That deadline resolves tomorrow morning, not today.
New edges
microsoft —invests_in→ vapi — Microsoft's M12 fund participated in Vapi's $50M Series B, led by Peak XV Partners. Company release via search relay, 2026-05-12, reported. The same treatment Gimlet Labs already gets for an M12 cheque.
Deliberately not added: Amazon's Ring is Vapi's marquee customer, having chosen it over 40 rivals to answer inbound questions about its home-security devices. An enterprise buying a software seat is not a supply, capital or ownership relationship, so it stays out — the same reasoning that keeps LMArena's leaderboard off the map. Worth a human's second opinion.
Still in talks
- Evoken — the Chinese company behind the Lovart design agent and the LiblibAI community is close to a round at about $3B, having raised nearly $300M in June at "over $2B", with ARR past $300M and a Hong Kong listing under consideration. Held off on both gates: "over $2B" is a floor, not a published post-money, and its notable shareholder is Ant Group, which is not Alibaba and has no node here.
- Stripe / OpenRouter — 40 days after the agreement, still "in the coming weeks" with closing conditions outstanding. Nearly three times the Crusoe precedent.
- Anthropic — the prospectus that reporting said would go public in late September has not, with two days left. S-1 still confidential; no share count, price range or ticker.
- Nscale — ten days after the S-1, still no price range and no final share count. The amendment that sets a real range is the one to catch.
- Mirendil ~$5B (Kleiner Perkins in talks to lead), Baseten ~$26B and Modal ~$15B, Legora ~$8.5B pre, Shield AI ≥$20B, Manus $4B, UniPat AI $2.5B, 1X at ~$6B to SoftBank, DensityAI ~$10B — all unchanged, none closed.
- DeepSeek — one new detail worth a date: the open round is now described as ~$7.45B at a RMB500B (~$75B) valuation, aiming to close by the end of October. Still no filing and no single confirmed post-money, so the flagged $45B stands; check again in November.
- Cohere / Aleph Alpha — twelve days after signing, the Series E is still unclosed and Canadian, German and EU clearances are all outstanding.
- NVIDIA / Hugging Face — NVIDIA still has not decided whether the deal is notifiable in Europe. Nothing filed, nothing decided, four weeks on.
Leads I could not verify
- Vapi's $500M post-money rests on TechCrunch alone. The GlobeNewswire release announces the round and states no valuation, and WebFetch is blocked for globenewswire.com here — a human reading that release either upgrades the mark to
verified or corrects it. - Evoken's "over $2B" is a floor statement relayed from 36Kr and TMTPost via Bloomberg; no outlet publishes an exact post-money.
- Cartesia still discloses no post-money across its seed, Series A and Series B, all three company-announced. The only figures in circulation are secondary-venue marks.
- Akamai's $19,800M is still a derived hand seed: implied shares from the 8-K warrant times one evening's after-hours print. Yahoo Finance is egress-blocked in this container, so it cannot be fixed by hand.
- The category sweep works in English only. Evoken trades under at least five names across Chinese trade press — Lovart, LiblibAI, Liblib, YanYu Technology, Evoken — and the 25 September sweep of AI video missed it entirely. Every category already swept needs re-sweeping in Chinese.
