2026-10-23 - Three giant rounds, none of them closed
Today the map's job was mostly to say no. The three biggest money stories in AI are all rounds reported as near-done and not actually done: DeepSeek has about 100 billion yuan in hand but nobody has published what the company is worth afterwards, OpenAI's pre-IPO raise got cheaper during the talks, and Fireworks is only in early conversations. What did land is a year-old research lab that raised $1 billion before shipping anything, and a $3.5 billion bank loan to Nebius.
Today in AI
- Meta's quarterly filing shows about $825B of future commitments for leases and contracts, up from nearly $700B in July, including $355.7B of leases not yet started and so off its balance sheet; the shares fell more than 5% - Bloomberg link.
- DeepSeek has raised roughly 100 billion yuan, about $15B and double its original target, from backers led by the battery maker CATL and Tencent, days after Washington ordered federal civilian agencies to strip its software out - TechCrunch link.
- OpenAI is close to signing up to $30B from investors in the United Arab Emirates and Coatue at a $1.25 trillion price, below the $1.4 trillion it was asking three weeks ago, as a bridge to a listing - CNBC link.
- Nebius borrowed $3.5B from Citi for one year against its data centres and GPUs, and its operating chief says the next tranche can be lent against more than $40B of investment-grade contracts - Nebius link.
- An Israeli security firm says it found 32 of NVIDIA's top-end Blackwell Ultra chips wired into systems linked to state-owned China Telecom, which US export rules are meant to prevent - The Information link.
- SpaceX opened a partner programme to push Grok into large companies, with Bain and Booz Allen reselling rollouts and Snowflake, Databricks and Supabase publishing plugins - xAI link.
Marks moved
Flapping Airplanesnew → $6,000M$1B Series A co-led by Index Ventures and Lux Capital, with earlier backers Sequoia, GV and Kleiner Perkins returning; 2026-10-21. reported, not verified: the company confirmed the round and its co-leads, while the $6B post-money is Bloomberg's figure and the company has not confirmed it. TechCrunch and Tech Funding News agree on both, and on the $180M seed at $1.5B nine months ago.
No existing mark moved. DeepSeek stays at $51,820M because no post-money has been reported and adding the raise to the reported pre-money would be this map's arithmetic; OpenAI stays at $852B and Fireworks at $17,500M because neither round is signed.
New edges
alphabet --invests_in-> flappingairplanes - GV is named in both the $180M seed and the $1B Series A. 2026-10-21, verified link.nvidia --invests_in-> flappingairplanes - NVIDIA is named among the company's investors, but the coverage does not say which round, so this one goes in dashed. 2026-10-21, reported link.
Not drawn: SpaceX's Grok partner network names NVIDIA, Databricks, Snowflake and Supabase, but marketplace distribution and plugin integrations are not edges here. Mistral and NVIDIA widened their partnership into engineering simulation, which is co-development, and mistral --builds_on-> nvidia exists already. General Compute signed to buy Positron's Atlas systems, but has no public valuation, so there is nothing to connect it to.
Still in talks
- DeepSeek: institutions are still competing for the last of the allocation, per Tencent Technology, and the only valuation anyone reports is 500 billion yuan before the new money.
- OpenAI: signatures targeted for the end of next week, size unsettled, and a separate deal for UAE computing capacity being negotiated alongside the equity.
- Fireworks: early talks, no round size, company declined to comment.
- Anthropic's IPO: the 23 October date a week-of-9-November roadshow implied has passed with nothing on the SEC's public database, so either the marketing slips or it files within days.
- Nscale's IPO: no price range and no marketing yet; Bloomberg reports investors putting $16B to $19B as the range likely to clear, against the $30B to $35B sought.
- Amazon and Decart, NVIDIA and Reflection AI, Stripe and OpenRouter, Cohere and Aleph Alpha, Lambda, Baseten, Mercor, Shield AI, Solidigm, Firmus: checked, all unchanged.
Leads I could not verify
- Today's one new mark rests on search corroboration only. No primary page could be opened all pass, so every figure above was read from result titles and datelines. A human should open TechCrunch's piece to settle whether NVIDIA joined the Series A or an earlier round.
- DeepSeek's valuation is unsettled. One aggregator prints "$74 billion pre-money" and another a "$13.8B target"; both restate the same 500 billion yuan at a different rate or stage.
- Qualcomm buying the RISC-V startup Akeana picked up a second low-grade relay and still has no primary; search returns only Qualcomm's Ventana Micro purchase of December 2025.
- The SpaceXSI rename. The partner-network announcement calls the AI unit SpaceXSI and coverage says the xAI division was renamed, but x.ai cannot be opened from here, so the node stays xAI.
- OpenAI's Orchestra Bio purchase (2026-10-20) is real and now in OpenAI's role, but terms were never disclosed and it had raised only ~$20M, so there is no node and no edge to draw.
