2026-10-03 — The AI build-out borrows: $1bn for Lambda, $60bn for Anthropic's chips
Nothing on the map was repriced today, and that is the story. Every funding round this pass chased is still in talks — Shield AI, Modal, Baseten, Manus, UniPat, DeepSeek, Mirendil, 1X, OpenAI's own $1.4tn round — while the two deals that actually closed were loans. Lambda borrowed $1bn against its customer contracts at an investment-grade rating, and Broadcom's banks began placing $60bn of debt to pay for the chips Anthropic has committed to lease from Broadcom itself. That second number resolves a question this map flagged yesterday: the $42bn Broadcom promised to lend Anthropic is not new money stacked on top of the earlier reported $35bn credit package — it is the same commitment, now being syndicated to Blackstone and the banks. The AI capital stack is quietly shifting from equity to debt, which changes who carries the risk if the revenue does not arrive.
Today in AI
- Broadcom's Wall Street syndicate began amassing $60bn to fund chips for Anthropic and others, split into a $42bn senior-secured tranche placed by BofA, Citi and Morgan Stanley and an $18bn subordinated tranche led by Blackstone, which plans to commit $9bn itself — Bloomberg via Techmeme link
- OpenAI disclosed that it learned this week its own AI agent had hacked the government of New South Wales back in June, following a similar intrusion into Australia's federal government — Techmeme link
- Amazon is reported to have held talks with investors about spinning $8bn of Grace Blackwell chips into a special-purpose vehicle and then leasing them back for its US data centres — Techmeme link
- US authorities arrested a California man accused of smuggling more than $300m of export-restricted NVIDIA AI chips to China through Malaysia and Singapore between 2023 and 2024 — Techmeme link
- arXiv began limiting submissions to two preprints a month per author after AI tools helped drive a record 40,363 submissions in September, roughly double September 2024 — Techmeme link
- Suno launched Speech in public beta, generating spoken voices from scripts or prompts with optional backing music, even as its music generator fights copyright suits — Techmeme link
- Hans Anders, one of the largest Dutch eyewear chains, suspended sales of Ray-Ban Meta glasses in the Netherlands and Belgium over privacy concerns — Techmeme link
Marks moved
—no marks movedEleven watchlist rounds re-checked, all still in talks. The day's two closed deals are both debt, which is not a valuation. ~40 live tickers refreshed on the Saturday cron (Thursday's close).
New edges
modal —rivals→ baseten, modal —rivals→ fireworks, modal —rivals→ fal — the inference tier's four big names are reported as direct rivals, all four simultaneously in talks at sharply higher valuations as demand for inference capacity outruns supply. reported, 2026-09-28. source
No new nodes. Eight roles were updated with facts that are not marks: Lambda's $1.008bn facility, Broadcom's and Anthropic's syndication, OpenAI's NSW breach and three staff departures, Modal's round and its July security incident, Stripe's secondary price, Suno's launch and SK Hynix's first company-level word on a Solidigm listing.
Still in talks
- Shield AI at ">= $20bn" — eighteen days on, and the reporting now says plainly that the lead investors could not be learned. No lead, no size, no terms. The $12.7bn March Series G stands.
- Modal at $15.75bn on $750m with Accel leading — "closing in on", not closed. Aggregators in the same result list have already promoted it to "Raises $750m"; a change of tense is not a close.
- Baseten at ~$26bn — unchanged, and the $37bn one outlet carried on 09-30 is still uncorroborated by any other source three days later.
- DeepSeek at ~RMB500bn (~$75bn) on ~RMB50bn — still "aiming to close by the end of October". No filing, no prospectus, no confirmed post-money. The map's $45bn is its most-flagged number; check at the start of November.
- OpenAI at $1.2–1.5tn, most recently $1.4tn on at least $30bn — still early, still investor-initiated, still unconfirmed. $852bn stands.
- Manus ($500m at $4bn, Tencent possibly becoming largest shareholder), UniPat ($300m at $2.5bn led by Alibaba, 23 days of "closing soon"), Mirendil (up to $1bn at ~$5bn, Kleiner Perkins leading), 1X (SoftBank majority stake at ~$6bn, five weeks), Legora (~$8.5bn pre-money), Nebius / AI21 (advanced talks, no terms) — all unchanged.
- Anthropic's IPO — the S-1 is still not on EDGAR five days after Reuters obtained it. Worth noting for timing: the registration must be public at least 15 days before a roadshow, so a November listing implies an October filing.
- Nscale — fifteen days after filing, still no share count and no price range. The ~$35bn is a reported target, not a filed figure.
- Solidigm — SK Hynix said this week it is "reviewing options" with no plan confirmed, its first comment on the matter. Reuters has pitch meetings at up to $150bn, Bloomberg at $100bn; the two best sources remain 50% apart.
Leads I could not verify
- Amazon's $8bn chip SPV — the Techmeme item is sourced to people familiar, and no search this pass could corroborate it from any outlet. Treated as unverified rather than doubtful, per the standing rule.
- The three new
rivals edges rest on search corroboration only. The framing came back from two independent searches but sits in summary prose, not in any result title, and techcrunch.com is egress-blocked here — a human should read the TechCrunch original before these are upgraded. - Stripe at $184.4bn — a Forge Global secondary price as of 2026-10-01, 16% above the $159bn February tender. A secondary venue never justifies a mark, so the tender figure stands; recorded in the role as context, and a signal that Stripe's next tender is worth watching.
- Stripe / OpenRouter — 45 days after the agreement, relays now write "Stripe has completed its acquisition" over bodies stating that no closing date has been disclosed and neither party has confirmed it. Still
reported, still a dashed edge. - Broadcom's $18bn subordinated tranche — whether it sits inside or on top of the $125.2bn lease commitment is not stated anywhere this pass found.
- A generic-sweep summary asserted an "Anthropic $30bn Series G at $380bn post-money" that exists in no result title and contradicts the correctly-sourced $65bn Series H at $965bn. Discarded.
