2026-10-04 — A $5bn coding-agent company, found three weeks late by the search that looks outside the map
A quiet Sunday with a thin news feed produced exactly one thing, and it came from the part of this process that is supposed to be the backstop. Factory, which sells autonomous coding agents to enterprise engineering teams, raised $200m at a $5bn valuation on 15 September — more than triple what it was worth five months earlier — and the map had never heard of it. Nothing pointed at it: the news feed only follows companies already on the map, and the round was three weeks old by the time a generic sweep returned it. What finally earned Factory its place here is not the money but a quarrel: its rivalry with Cognition stopped being a matter of opinion in September, when Factory's chief executive publicly accused a board adviser of confiding in "our largest competitor" and the adviser turned up as that competitor's chief revenue officer two hours later. Elsewhere, every round this map is waiting on is still waiting — eleven of them, same as yesterday.

Marks moved
—no marks movedEleven watchlist rounds re-checked, all still in talks. One new node added. No live ticker refresh: the ticker cron does not run Sundays, so the ~40 public caps are Thursday's close.
New edges
factory —rivals→ cognition — the two biggest venture-funded builders of autonomous software-engineering agents, and now openly hostile: Factory's Matan Grinberg said on X that he removed VC Chris Degnan as a board adviser for confiding in "our largest competitor" and accused Cognition engineers of posing as job candidates; Degnan announced he had joined Cognition as chief revenue officer two hours later, says he resigned rather than was fired, and denies sharing anything confidential. Khosla Ventures, an investor in both, split in public. reported, 2026-09-16. source
One new node: Factory at $5,000m verified, on the $200m round announced by both founders on 15 September. Customers named in the coverage include NVIDIA, Adobe, Palo Alto Networks, T-Mobile, Royal Bank of Canada and Blackstone — deliberately not edges, since an enterprise buying a software seat is not a supply, capital or ownership link. Blackstone is both a customer and a named investor and has no node here; if it ever gets one, two edges land at once.
Still in talks
- Shield AI at ">= $20bn" — nineteen days on, and the reporting still names no investor, no size and no terms. The $12.7bn March Series G stands.
- Modal at $15.75bn on $750m with Accel leading, and Baseten at ~$26bn — eleven days on, neither closed. The $37bn figure one outlet attached to Baseten on 30 September is still uncorroborated four days later.
- DeepSeek at ~RMB500bn (~$75bn) on ~RMB50bn — still "aiming to close by the end of October", with annualised revenue around $1bn. No filing, no prospectus, no confirmed post-money; the map's $45bn is its most-flagged number. Check at the start of November.
- OpenAI at $1.2–1.5tn, most recently $1.4tn on at least $30bn — still early, still investor-initiated, still unconfirmed. $852bn stands.
- Manus at $4bn on $500m, with Tencent in talks to become its largest shareholder — seventeen days of "close to sealing".
- Mirendil at ~$5bn on up to $1bn, Kleiner Perkins leading — twelve days on, three months after the same investors led its $200m seed at $1bn.
- 1X — SoftBank still negotiating a majority stake at about $6bn, five weeks on. A majority-stake price is not a post-money, so even a close would not settle the mark.
- UniPat AI at $2.5bn on $300m led by Alibaba — twenty-four days of "set to close soon".
- Legora at a ~$8.5bn pre-money on at least $300m, and Emulate at $3.7bn on up to $700m — both still unsigned.
- Nebius / AI21 Labs — advanced talks, terms undisclosed. Nebius bought Tavily for up to $400m and Inferize for $100–150m this year on the same strategy, so the precedent is real; the direction of an AI21 price is not, since the map carries it at $1.4bn and the collapsed NVIDIA talks were at $2–3bn.
- Anthropic — six days after Reuters obtained the IPO prospectus, nothing has appeared on EDGAR. A registration statement must be public at least 15 days before a roadshow, so a November listing now implies an October filing in a narrowing window.
- Nscale — sixteen days after filing, the S-1 still shows placeholder values for both the share count and the price range.
Leads I could not verify
- Factory's $5bn rests on search corroboration only: factory.com is blocked by this environment's egress proxy, so the company's own announcement was never read. Its title does carry the figure, and The Next Web and DevOps.com agree on it, but no Reuters, Bloomberg, TechCrunch or CNBC story with the number surfaced. A human should open factory.com/news/5-billion-valuation.
factory —rivals→ cursor was not added. The coverage repeatedly brackets Factory with Cursor, Cognition and Claude Code, but every instance this pass sits in a search summary or on a comparison content farm rather than in a reputable headline — unverified, not false.- Crunchbase's weekly funding roundup for 28 Sept–3 Oct leads with Baseten's $1.5bn Series F at $13bn. That is the June round this map already carries, filed under last week. Weekly roundups re-date rounds; check the round's own date before reading one as news.
- Stripe / OpenRouter, 46 days on, is the same trap in the other direction: relays now run headlines saying Stripe "completes" the acquisition over bodies stating that neither company has confirmed it. The map still carries $7bn as
reported. - Speak was re-checked for a newer round and holds at $1bn. The only post-2024 figures are aggregator marks (clay.com's "$1.17bn", Tracxn, PitchBook), which never justify a number here.
