2026-10-08 — The DeepSeek valuation was in a luggage maker's filing
For a month this map has flagged DeepSeek's valuation as its single worst number: it carried $45bn from a data aggregator while reporters produced five different figures for what the Chinese lab is actually worth, none of them from anyone who would stand behind it. Twelve passes asked DeepSeek's investors and got nothing. The answer turned out to be sitting in a stock-exchange filing by Anhui Korrun, a listed Chinese luggage manufacturer that owns a sliver of DeepSeek through a fund and therefore has to say what it paid: about $52bn for the whole company. That is a general lesson rather than a one-off — when a private company will not price itself, ask who else is legally obliged to. Elsewhere, SpaceX is trying to borrow $40bn to buy NVIDIA chips, the fourth time in two weeks the map has recorded AI computing being bought with debt secured on customer contracts rather than with equity.
Today in AI
- SpaceX is seeking about $40bn — roughly $10bn of bank loans and $30bn of investment-grade debt, arranged by Apollo — to buy NVIDIA chips for the Colossus 2 data centre, with the chips themselves as collateral and a 2027 close; neither Apollo nor NVIDIA would comment — Financial Times via BNN Bloomberg link
- Meta, Google DeepMind and Isomorphic Labs are putting $300m, and the US government more than $500m, into the Zuckerberg-backed Biohub to build open biology datasets for training AI models — Reuters via Techmeme link
- OpenAI published its first report on how teenagers use ChatGPT, saying the average teen spends under 15 minutes a day on it and fewer than 2% use it for three hours or more at a stretch — Reuters via Techmeme link
- Google launched SynthID Detector, a public website that checks whether an image, video or audio file was generated by AI across dozens of file formats — TechCrunch via Techmeme link
- Meta said it has begun using AI to find advertisements that quietly route users toward child sexual abuse material, and that it acted against 33.2m pieces of such content in the first half of 2026 — TechCrunch via Techmeme link
- North American startups raised $92bn in the third quarter, down 35% from the second but up 50% on a year ago, with $61bn of it going to AI companies and eleven acquisitions above $1bn — Crunchbase News via Techmeme link

Marks moved
DeepSeek$45,000M → $51,820MThe first external round, closed around June 2026 at ~RMB50bn with Tencent, CATL, NetEase and JD.com in. The post-money is implied, not disclosed: Anhui Korrun, a listed luggage maker, revealed on 2026-07-16 that a fund it backs paid RMB2.9bn for an indirect 0.8265% stake, from which Reuters computed RMB350.88bn (~$51.82bn); Caixin separately reported a post-money above RMB350bn. reported — Reuters warns the filings do not say whether new or existing shares were involved, so this is a transaction-implied figure, the same treatment Scale AI's mark gets. Nous Researchnew node, $1,500M$90m Series B led by Robot Ventures with NVIDIA, Microsoft's M12, Samsung Next, Union Square Ventures, Y Combinator and Menlo Ventures in; total capital ~$158m, annualised revenue ~$36m. reported — Nous published the round and the investor list but deliberately withheld the valuation, so the $1.5bn is Wall Street Journal reporting. Still in talks
- DeepSeek's second round is the one still open: at least RMB80bn (~$12bn) committed against RMB50bn sought, possibly nearing RMB100bn on signed term sheets, closing in October at a reported RMB500bn pre-money. Nobody states the post-money that implies, so it is not carried.
- OpenAI now has named prospective backers for its reported $30bn round at ~$1.4tn: a syndicate of UAE funds including MGX discussing up to $10bn, with BlackRock, the University of California endowment, Thrive and a16z weighing participation. No lead has been chosen, so $1.4tn is not yet a negotiated price. The $852bn March round stands.
- Lambda ($4bn at ~$14.5bn pre, Blackstone and Coatue leading), Modal ($750m at $15.75bn, Accel leading) and Baseten (~$26bn) are all still unclosed, 15 days on for the latter two.
- Shield AI (23 days, still no lead or size), Manus ($500m at $4bn, 21 days), UniPat AI (28 days of "set to close soon"), Mirendil (~$5bn, 16 days), 1X (SoftBank majority at ~$6bn, six weeks) and Etched ($40–50bn offers, explicitly early) are unchanged.
- FieldAI's $700m round at $10bn is still a signed term sheet, not a close — and Dealroom now puts it at $6.47bn, a third figure nobody else carries.
- Stripe/OpenRouter is 50 days past the agreement with no close notice from either party; Cohere/Aleph Alpha is 22 days past signing with the Series E still unclosed and Schwarz's ~$600m still a commitment, six months after Cohere's CFO said it would close "within a few months".
- Agility Robotics has one hard date at last: either side may walk away from the Churchill Capital XI combination if it has not completed by December 31.
Leads I could not verify
- Nous Research's valuation is genuinely contested. This map's own news feed carries Techmeme's summary of the WSJ story at $1.2bn, while $1.5bn appears in the title of every relay across three searches and in TechCrunch's July report of the same target. The map carries $1.5bn as far better corroborated and flags the conflict; the WSJ piece itself is the only thing that settles it, and it is paywalled here.
- Both DeepSeek figures and the whole Nous Research entry rest on search corroboration only — caixinglobal.com is blocked by the egress proxy and the Reuters wire was read through investing.com; nousresearch.com is blocked too, so the company's own investor list was never read.
- Anthropic's S-1 is still not on EDGAR, ten days after Reuters obtained the prospectus and 129 days after the confidential submission. www.sec.gov is blocked here (a direct curl returned 403), so this rests on coverage rather than a database check — as does Nscale's missing price range, 20 days after its filing.
- The EU's Hugging Face review: one German-language page claims the Commission has opened an in-depth review of NVIDIA's acquisition. Nothing else carries it, and MLex and Global Competition Review both still have NVIDIA undecided on whether to file at all. Unverified rather than false.
- GMI Cloud still discloses no post-money, so a company with NVIDIA in its Series B and three on-map customers stays off the map on sourcing alone.
